Members and clubs are reminded that several changes in NSCA classification are coming on January 1, 2025. Here is a summary of classification changes for next year:
Starting January 1, 2025: NSCA will remove E Class. All members in E class for both 12-gauge and sub-gauge will be moved up to D class and start with zero (0) punches.
A new member who has never shot any registered clay targets will be assigned Class “C.” (Old rule was assigned Class “D.”)
Starting January 1, 2025: New punch requirements to punch up in 12-gauge class.
D – C – 4 punches (old was 6 punches)
C – B – 6 punches (old was 8 punches
B – A – 10 punches (old was 12 punches)
A – AA – 14 punches (no change)
AA – Master – 20 punches (no changes)
If you have earned enough punches in your 12-gauge class in 2024 to punch up with the new 2025 punch requirements, your class will be updated on January 1. 12-gauge carry-over punches from 2023 will fall off first and not be included in your 2025 punch count.
On January 1, 2025: All members’ sub-gauge classification will be automatically re-classified to one class lower than their 12-gauge classification UNLESS their current sub-gauge classification is equal to or greater than their 12-gauge classification.
A shooter’s sub-gauge classification may never be more than one (1) class lower than their 12-gauge classification. As a shooter moves up in their 12-gauge classification, their sub-gauge classification will automatically move up also, starting the new class with zero (0) punches UNLESS their sub-gauge classification is:
already one class lower than their new 12-gauge classification
equal to their new 12-gauge classification, or
higher than their new 12-gauge classification
Effective in 2024, a shooter may now request a 1,000-target review of their sub-gauge classification ONLY if their sub-gauge classification is equal to or higher than their 12-gauge classification.
End-of-Year Review Criteria
The 2024 end-of-year review will take place during the week of January 20. The following criteria will be used:
12-Gauge Classification:
ONLY shooters who started and ended the year in the same class and shot a minimum of 500 registered targets or more are eligible for end-of-year review.
If a shooter has accumulated FEWER THAN the following required minimum number of punches in their ending class for the year, and then if their calculated CCFR (Current Class Finish Ratio) in their ending class for the year is greater than 0.400, the shooter will be reviewed and down-classed.
Number of punches earned per class, to be down-classed:
Master Class – fewer than 15 punches
AA Class – fewer than 7 punches
A Class – fewer than 6 punches
B Class – fewer than 5 punches
C Class – fewer than 3 punches
D Class – fewer than 2 punches
The CCFR is determined from the total finishes in ending class events divided by the total number of entries in ending class events for the current year (for 12-gauge events only) which can be found on the NSCA website, and in the individual shooter’s information records (Shooter History).
A shooter who has opted out of the end-of-year review will not be reviewed for end-of-year review.
International shooters will not be automatically down-classed at the end-of-year review but may email nbowers@nssa-nsca.com to request a review.
Sub-Gauge Classification:
There will be no end-of-year review for sub-gauge.
Remember: A shooter who has been down-classed CAN REFUSE the down-class by simply emailing their request to nbowers@nssa-nsca.com.
